ADA standards specify that permanent signs identifying rooms or areas must include both visual characters and tactile (Braille and raised) characters. Character height must be minimum 5/8 inch for every 10 feet of viewing distance. Characters must have contrast ratio of at least 3:1 between character and background. Stroke width of characters must be consistent, typically 1/8 to 1/5 of character height. Braille must be Grade 2 Braille positioned below the visual characters. Raised characters (1/32 inch to 1/8 inch high) supplement Braille and visual characters. Pictograms used to identify spaces must have Braille labels. Directional signage leading to accessible routes and facilities guides occupants. Exit signage must be large and illuminated for visibility.
