ASCE 7 Live Load Provisions

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Establishes design live loads for different building uses and occupancies.

ASCE 7 Chapter 4 provides tabulated live loads for different floor and roof uses. Residential spaces require 40 pounds per square foot. Office spaces require 50 pounds per square foot. Retail spaces require 100 pounds per square foot due to merchandise storage on floors. Warehouse spaces require 125 pounds per square foot. Corridor live load is typically 80 pounds per square foot. Roof live loads are typically 20 pounds per square foot for regular maintenance. Storage areas on roofs may require 25-100 pounds per square foot. Concentrated loads simulate fork lifts and other equipment, typically 2,000-4,000 pounds. Live load reduction is permitted in buildings with large tributary areas where it is statistically unlikely all areas carry maximum load simultaneously.
