Section 705 establishes fire partitions, which are 1-hour fire-resistance-rated assemblies used to separate certain spaces. Fire partitions are less stringent than fire barriers or fire walls. Common applications include separation between dwelling units in multi-unit buildings, separation of corridors from occupancy areas, and separation of certain hazardous areas. Fire partitions must be continuous from floor to floor but need not extend through concealed spaces. Openings require fire-rated doors and frames. Some building codes permit openings up to 25 percent of the partition area in certain conditions. Through-penetration firestopping is required for pipes, ducts, and other items crossing fire partitions.
