IBC Section 902 — Manual Fire Alarm Systems

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Specifies installation and operation of manual fire alarm pull stations.

Section 902 requires manual fire alarm systems (pull stations) in most occupied buildings. Pull stations must be installed at exits and in corridors with maximum 200 feet travel distance between stations. Pull stations must be clearly labeled and brightly colored to aid location. Activation of a pull station must initiate an alarm immediately, with no delay for verification. Some systems permit a brief verification period before full alarm activation to reduce nuisance alarms. Station boxes must be recessed or projecting to ensure they are not obscured by other elements. Once activated, a pull station must require deliberate action to reset, preventing accidental cancellation.
