IFC Section 902 — Portable Fire Extinguishers

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Establishes requirements for portable fire extinguishers in buildings.

Section 902 requires portable fire extinguishers at specified locations and densities in buildings. Class A extinguishers (for ordinary combustibles) are typically 5-10 pounds with 3,000-6,000 square foot coverage per unit. Class B extinguishers (for flammable liquids) have lower coverage per unit due to greater hazard. Type K extinguishers (for cooking oils) are required in kitchens with cooking processes. Annual inspection and maintenance verify extinguisher condition and charge pressure. Personnel must be trained in extinguisher use, though not required to use them (evacuation is primary response).
