IRC Section E3901 — Electrical Service

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Establishes electrical service location and accessibility for inspection.

Section E3901 specifies that the main electrical panel is located in an accessible location for repair and maintenance. Panel location inside the home is preferred over exterior. Service entrance must be at accessible height, typically 4-6 feet above floor. Weather protection is required for exterior service entrances. Clear space in front of the panel (36 inches minimum width) permits safe operation.
