IRC Section R703 — Flashing and Weather Resistance

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Requires proper flashing at building penetrations to prevent water infiltration.

Section R703 specifies flashing materials and installation at windows, doors, chimneys, and utilities. Flashing is typically galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper. Flashing must overlap water-resistive barriers and exterior coverings to shed water downward. Caulking seals gaps where flashing meets openings. Flashing into brick veneer channels water out of the wall rather than toward the wood frame.
