NFPA 101 Assembly Occupancy Requirements

Specifies egress, fire protection, and operational requirements for assembly occupancies.

NFPA 101 Chapter 12 addresses assembly occupancies in detail. Minimum two exits are required, with additional exits for large occupant loads. Aisles must be minimum 44 inches wide for seating areas without armrests. Seat spacing and row depths are specified to ensure evacuation flow. Accessible seating must be distributed throughout the space with companion seating for attendants. Emergency lighting must illuminate exits and aisles. Voice communication systems must alert occupants to evacuate and provide instructions. Sprinkler systems typically must be installed throughout assembly areas.
