Suspended scaffolds are suspended from the roof or upper floors of buildings. All suspending equipment including chains, cables, ropes, and rigging hardware must be rated for at least 6 times the maximum load. Wire rope must be continuously inspected and damaged rope must be replaced immediately. Fasteners must be of proper size and installed according to specifications. Platforms must be fully decked with guardrails and toe boards. Safety devices must prevent the scaffold from falling if ropes break. These include guides, brakes, and tie-in points. Manual suspension systems using ropes and pulleys require proper training and maintenance. Powered suspension systems must have redundant safety devices. Limiting devices must prevent platforms from rising into structures. All suspension systems must be inspected by a qualified person before use. Daily inspections must verify all components are in safe condition. Welded connections must be inspected for cracks. Threaded connections must be tight and secure. Rigging must not be modified or altered from original design. All workers must wear fall protection and must be trained on suspension system operations.
