OSHA 1926.750 — Steel Erection General Requirements

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Structural steel assembly and erection must follow safe work procedures

All structural steel erection must be done by qualified ironworkers who have been trained on the specific procedures for the project. A qualified person must plan and supervise all steel erection work. Temporary bracing and stabilization must be maintained until permanent connections are complete. Final connections must be installed to provide full structural stability. All steel members must be properly positioned before bolting or welding begins. Hand signals must be used to direct crane operations during steel placement. Signalpersons must be trained and positioned to maintain visual contact with operators and loads. Only qualified connectors may work on structural steel assembly. Bolting must follow the erection plan and all bolts must be fully tightened according to specifications. Welding must be performed by qualified welders and must follow approved welding procedures. Inspection of connections must verify proper fit and full development of strength. Temporary metal decking must be installed as steel placement progresses to prevent falls and material drop hazards. Decking must have adequate fastening to prevent displacement. Edge protection must be installed to prevent falls from walking surfaces. Fall arrest systems must be used where guardrails cannot be installed. All personnel working on steel erection must wear high-visibility clothing. Work must stop during adverse weather including wind that could cause instability.
