All construction sites must have first aid and medical services readily available. If a hospital or clinic is near the site, personnel can be transported for treatment. If emergency medical services are not immediately available, trained first aid personnel must be present. First aid kits must be maintained and stocked with supplies for treatment of minor injuries. Eyewash stations and safety showers must be available where chemical or thermal eye injuries could occur. Stretchers and blankets must be available for transporting seriously injured workers. Emergency action plans must identify procedures for medical emergencies and evacuation routes. All personnel must know how to summon emergency services by telephone or radio. Written procedures must be posted at the site. Designated personnel must be trained in first aid and CPR. Defibrillators (AEDs) may be made available to improve survival from cardiac events. Trained personnel must not attempt treatment beyond their training level and must summon professional medical assistance for serious injuries. Documentation of first aid treatment must be maintained. Incident investigation must follow serious injuries or fatalities. Employers must ensure prompt access to medical treatment for occupational injuries and illnesses.
