Updated Mar 26, 2026
Licensed crane operator controlling mobile and tower cranes

Crane operators control tower cranes, mobile cranes, and specialty lifting equipment on construction sites. Most jurisdictions require NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) certification or state licensing. Training includes classroom and practical exam preparation. Work includes safe equipment operation, load calculation, signal communication, and site safety. Operators must understand rigging, load charts, and safety regulations. Typical hourly rates range from $45-$85. Union crane operators belong to the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). Specializations include tower crane operation, mobile cranes, specialized lifting (rolls, skids), and heavy haul. Certifications are required and ongoing training is mandatory.
