Electrician — Electrical Trade

Updated Mar 24, 2026
Licensed electrical trade covering power, lighting, low-voltage, and fire alarm systems

Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in buildings. Licensed electricians must complete apprenticeships (typically 4-5 years) and pass journeyman exams. Work includes power distribution, lighting design, branch circuitry, HVAC controls, fire alarm systems, and low-voltage communications. Electricians work with voltage from 120V household to 480V three-phase industrial systems. Typical hourly rates range from $45-$85, with union rates significantly higher in union markets. In union shops, electricians typically belong to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) with additional training in specialized areas like solar installation, EV charging, or data networking. Electricians must follow the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local amendments in all installations.
