CEC / NEC 210.52(C) — Kitchen Counter Receptacles (post-2023 change)

Updated May 18, 2026
CEC adopts NEC 2023: 210.52(C)(2) for islands/peninsulas was DELETED — no longer requires receptacles on island faces.

California Electrical Code (Title 24 Part 3) adopts NEC 2023. Important rule change: 210.52(C)(2) — the requirement for receptacles on kitchen islands and peninsulas was ELIMINATED in NEC 2023 due to safety concerns (cord-on-floor hazard, kitchen-fire causation). Existing islands may keep their receptacles. New construction: no island-face receptacle required, but counter receptacles every 24 inches along walls per 210.52(C)(1) still apply, GFCI per 210.8(A) for all kitchen receptacles within 6 ft of sink. AZ and NV still on NEC 2020 (or earlier) — old 210.52(C)(5) island-receptacle rule still applies there.
