IBC Section 1210 — Assisted Rescue for Persons with Disabilities

Requires communication systems and procedures for persons unable to self-evacuate.

Section 1210 addresses evacuation of persons with disabilities who cannot use stairs. Two-way voice communication systems in refuge areas permit occupants to call for assistance. Emergency responders can assess occupant location and prioritize rescue. Hospitals and care facilities develop evacuation procedures for bedridden and critical-care patients. Evacuation chairs can move seated persons down stairs with appropriate training.
