Section 1402 requires that all common use circulation paths (passageways regularly used by occupants) be accessible. This includes corridors, hallways, and main thoroughfares. Accessible routes must connect entries, exits, elevators, restrooms, and other common areas. Surfaces must be firm, stable, and slip-resistant. Slopes must not exceed 5 percent. Width must be adequate for accessible circulation, typically 48 inches for two-way traffic. Detectable warning strips warn persons with vision impairments of hazards including steps or platform edges. Handrails guide occupants with vision impairments.
