Updated Mar 26, 2026
Glass types, safety glazing, structural glazing, sloped glazing, and impact-resistant glazing requirements.

IBC Ch24: 2405 safety glazing per CPSC 16 CFR 1201. Required in: doors, shower/tub enclosures, guards/railings, within 24in of door (impact zone), panels >9sf with bottom edge <18in. Tempered: 4x strength of annealed, breaks into small pieces. Laminated: holds together when broken, impact-resistant. IGU: insulated glass unit, 2-3 panes with sealed airspace. Low-e: metallic coating reduces solar heat gain. Chapter references ASTM E1300 for wind load resistance, ASCE 7 for load determination. Sloped glazing (>15 degrees from vertical): laminated or screened below per 2405.3. HVHZ: impact-rated per ASTM E1886/E1996 or missile-impact testing.
