Electrical Service Installation Method

Updated Mar 26, 2026
Installing residential electrical service: meter base, panel, grounding electrode system, branch circuits.

1) Coordinate with utility: service type (overhead/underground), meter location, transformer sizing. 2) Install meter base/can: utility-approved, mounted at required height (5-6ft center typically). Weather head (overhead) or lateral connection (underground). 3) Service entrance conductors: from weather head/lateral to meter to main panel. Size per NEC 230.79 (min 100A residential). 4) Main panel: install per NEC 408. Bond neutral to ground at service (only). Ground bus, neutral bus. 5) Grounding electrode system per NEC 250.50: drive ground rods (8ft, 5/8in), connect water pipe bond, Ufer ground if available. Grounding electrode conductor per Table 250.66. 6) Branch circuits: per panel schedule. 15A (14 AWG lighting), 20A (12 AWG receptacles, kitchen, bath, laundry, garage). Dedicated: dishwasher, disposal, range, dryer, HVAC. 7) Call for rough inspection before closing walls.
