Structural Steel — ASTM A992 (W-shapes)

Updated Mar 24, 2026
Standard structural steel for wide-flange shapes (W-beams, W-columns). 50 ksi yield strength, 65 ksi tensile strength. The dominant steel grade for structural framing in commercial construction.

ASTM A992 is the standard specification for structural steel shapes used in building construction. Yield strength: 50 ksi minimum. Tensile strength: 65 ksi minimum. Carbon: 0.23% max. This replaced A36 (36 ksi) as the standard for W-shapes. Used for columns, beams, girders, and bracing in steel-framed buildings. Fire resistance: unprotected steel fails at approximately 1,000°F. Fire protection options: spray-applied fireproofing (SFRM), intumescent paint, concrete encasement, or gypsum board enclosure. Connection types: bolted (A325, A490 bolts) or welded (E70XX electrodes). Fabrication lead time: typically 8-16 weeks depending on market conditions and complexity.
