Wood Wall Framing — Platform Frame Construction

Updated Mar 25, 2026
Standard method for framing exterior and interior walls in residential and light commercial construction. Build walls flat on deck, tilt up. 16 or 24 OC stud spacing. Headers over openings.

Platform framing is the dominant wall framing method for buildings up to 3 stories (IBC 2308 conventional construction). Steps: (1) Snap chalk lines on subfloor for wall locations, (2) Cut plates — bottom plate and double top plate, (3) Lay out stud locations 16 OC (or 24 OC for advanced framing), (4) Cut studs to height (typical 92-5/8 for 8-foot ceiling with single bottom + double top plate), (5) Frame headers over openings — size per span tables or engineering, (6) Add king studs and jack studs at openings, (7) Install cripple studs above headers and below sills, (8) Assemble wall flat on deck with nail gun — 2x16d nails through plates into studs, (9) Tilt wall up with crew (minimum 2 workers), (10) Plumb and brace, (11) Nail bottom plate to floor framing, (12) Install corner assemblies and intersecting wall connections. Productivity: experienced crew of 3 frames 100-150 LF/day of exterior wall including openings.
