IBC Table 601 — Fire-Resistance Rating Requirements

Updated Mar 24, 2026
Specifies minimum fire-resistance ratings for structural elements based on construction type (Type I through V). Type IA requires 3-hour rated structural frame, 2-hour floors, and 1.5-hour roof.

Table 601 is the foundational table that determines fire-resistance requirements for every structural element in a building based on its construction type. Type IA (most restrictive): structural frame 3hr, bearing walls exterior/interior 3hr, floor construction 2hr, roof construction 1.5hr. Type IB: 2/2/2/1hr. Type IIA: 1/1/1/1hr. Type IIB: 0/0/0/0hr (non-rated). Type IIIA: 2/1/1/1hr exterior, 0 interior. Type IV-A (mass timber): 3/2/2/1.5hr with additional mass timber provisions per IBC 602.4. Type V-A: 1/1/1/1hr. Type V-B: 0/0/0/0hr. Cross-reference with Table 504.4 for allowable height and Table 506.2 for allowable area.
