Concrete Slab-on-Grade Pour Method

Updated Mar 26, 2026
Complete procedure for placing, finishing, and curing a concrete slab-on-grade.

1) Subgrade prep: compact to 95% modified Proctor, proof roll. Vapor barrier: 10-15 mil poly (ASTM E1745), lapped 6in, sealed. 2) Formwork: 2x4/2x6 lumber or metal, staked at 4ft, verified elevation with laser level. Pour strips for large slabs (max 50-60ft between control joints). 3) Reinforcement: WWR or rebar on chairs (3in clear from bottom, 2in from top for 4in slab with rebar at center). Edge forms for thickened edge. 4) Pre-pour: wet subgrade (not standing water), check weather (no rain, >50F). 5) Pour: place concrete (pump or direct), spread with come-along, strike off with screed (vibrating or manual). Max 90 min from batch to placement. 6) Finish: bull float immediately after screeding, wait for bleed water to absorb, power trowel (wait until thumbprint ~1/4in). Broom finish for exterior, hard trowel for interior. 7) Control joints: saw-cut within 6-18 hrs, 1/4 slab depth, max 15ft spacing. 8) Cure: wet cure, curing compound, or blankets for 7 days minimum.
