Level 2: tape + one coat over fasteners and accessories (tile substrate, garage). Level 3: tape + two additional coats (medium/heavy texture). Level 4: tape + three coats sanded smooth (flat paint, light texture — standard residential). Level 5: skim coat entire surface (critical lighting, gloss/enamel paint). Process: 1) Pre-fill: tape all joints (paper tape embedded in setting compound, or mesh tape). Coat corner bead and accessories. 2) Second coat (block coat): wider coat 7-8 in over joints, fill fasteners, accessories. 3) Third coat (skim coat): feather 10-12 in, sand smooth between coats. 4) Sanding: 150-220 grit, light touch. Check with raking light. 5) Level 5: apply thin skim coat (setting compound or primer-surfacer) over entire surface. Tools: 6/8/10/12 in knives or automatic taping tools (bazooka, flat box, angle roller). Fastener pattern: 7 in o.c. field, 12 in ceiling, 16 in walls per GA-216.
