Section 1008 specifies requirements for interior stairs and ramps used as exit access (the portion of egress before entering an exit). Interior stairs must meet the same dimensional standards as exit stairs including riser height, tread depth, and handrail dimensions. However, interior stairs do not require fire-rating unless they are part of the exit system. Stairs within occupancy areas must have fire-resistance-rated enclosure if they serve as exits. Ramps used as exit access must have slopes not exceeding 1:12 and other dimensional requirements. Open stairs without enclosure are permitted within individual occupancy areas like office spaces or retail areas, provided they do not serve as required exits.
