IBC Section 1013 — Exit Signs

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Specifies illumination, color, size, and placement requirements for exit identification signage.

Section 1013 requires clearly visible and illuminated exit signs to identify exits throughout buildings. Exit signs must be red lettering on white background or white lettering on red background, with letter height minimum 6 inches. Exit signs must be illuminated with minimum 5-foot candles unless they are photoluminescent. Illuminated signs use either incandescent or LED light sources with integral batteries for operation during power loss. Exit signs must be visible from all directions with maximum 200 feet viewing distance. Directional arrows on exit signs indicate exit location when not obvious. Tactile signage (raised characters and Braille) is required at certain locations for persons with visual impairments. Exit signs must be maintained in functional condition with any damaged or non-functional signs replaced immediately.
