IBC Section 1023 — Panic Hardware and Crash Bars

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Establishes panic hardware requirements for rapid egress in occupancies with large populations.

Section 1023 requires panic hardware (crash bars) on exit doors in assembly occupancies with occupant loads exceeding 50. Panic hardware must release door latches upon pushing without requiring knowledge of latch operation. Bars must extend across the full width of the door. Force required is typically 15 pounds (maximum 30 pounds per code change). Doors must open within 1-2 seconds of releasing the bar. Delayed egress systems permit delaying door opening by 15-30 seconds if building has fire alarm and sprinkler systems.
