Section 1024 permits exit doors to be locked from the outside to prevent unauthorized entry while remaining freely operable from inside for emergency egress. Electronic locks with manual override are acceptable. Electromagnetic locks must release upon fire alarm activation. Automatic door unlocking provides egress without action by occupants. Timed locks that automatically unlock periodically are also permitted.
