IBC Section 1203 — Interior Finish Application

Establishes where flame-spread rated finishes are required in buildings.

Section 1203 specifies that interior finishes in corridors, exit passageways, and certain other spaces must meet Class A or B flame-spread ratings. Open office areas may permit Class C finishes in sprinklered buildings. Highly visible means of egress require higher ratings than remote storage areas. Multiple coats of finish and substrate combinations must be tested together.

Two exits or exit access doorways required from any space where occupant load exceeds the table values. Spaces with occupant load exceeding 500 require a minimum of 3 exits. Spaces exceeding 1,000 require 4 exits.

Maximum travel distance from any point in a building to an exit shall not exceed 200 feet unsprinklered or 250 feet sprinklered for most occupancies. Specific occupancies have modified limits.
