IBC Section 2401 — Steel Construction

Establishes design, fabrication, and erection requirements for structural steel buildings.

Section 2401 references AISC 360 (American Institute of Steel Construction) for structural steel design. Steel members are designed using plastic hinge analysis and moment redistribution. Lateral-torsional buckling limits are checked for slender beams. Shear buckling resistance is verified for plate girders. Connection design accounts for bearing, friction, and tear-out modes of failure. Bolted connections use high-strength bolts torqued to specific values. Welded connections require qualified welders and inspection of welds. Fireproofing is applied to protect steel from temperature loss during fires, with concrete encasement, spray-applied fireproofing, or intumescent coatings.
