Section 305 establishes requirements for Group E occupancies, which include schools, colleges, universities, day-care centers, training facilities, and other buildings where persons assemble for educational purposes. Educational occupancies require heightened attention to life safety because occupants, particularly children, may not be familiar with egress routes and require supervised evacuation. Minimum two exits are required from all spaces, with specific egress widths calculated per occupant load of one person per 50 square feet for classrooms and laboratories. Exit corridors must be at least 6 feet wide in areas serving occupant loads exceeding 50. All corridors must be protected with a 1-hour fire-resistance rating as separation from other spaces. Exterior exit doors must open directly to grade or to properly designed exit stairs or ramps. Educational buildings exceeding 12,500 square feet on a single floor or multiple stories must have automatic sprinkler systems installed throughout. Emergency lighting must be installed to illuminate exit paths and signage clearly. Manual fire alarm systems are required with pull stations positioned no more than 5 feet from exits. Special attention applies to areas with hazardous operations, including science laboratories with specific requirements for fume hoods, chemical storage, and emergency showers. Detention and institutional components within educational facilities require additional safeguards.
