IBC Section 406 — Temporary Structures and Tents

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Regulates temporary buildings and tent structures with limited occupancy and short duration.

Section 406 addresses structures intended for temporary use of 180 days or less. Tents with aggregate floor area not exceeding 600 square feet may be permitted without permits in some jurisdictions. Larger temporary structures and tents require approved structural designs accounting for wind loads and snow loads. Occupant load is limited based on egress availability. Temporary structures typically require temporary electrical, mechanical, and fire protection systems. Tent fabric must meet flame-spread ratings. Exit requirements are based on occupant load with minimum two exits for occupant loads exceeding 50. Temporary structures must be removed within specified timeframes, typically 180 days.
