IBC Chapter 26 — Plastic

Updated Mar 26, 2026
Plastic materials in construction: foam plastic insulation, light-transmitting plastics, plastic veneer, fiber-reinforced polymer.

IBC Ch26: 2603 foam plastic insulation must be separated from interior by thermal barrier (1/2in gypsum) or pass NFPA 286 room-corner fire test. Ignition barrier: attic/crawl spaces (1/2in fiber cement, 23/32 wood). SPF (spray foam): must comply with 2603 + fire testing. 2606 LPSP (light-transmitting plastic panels): skylights, wall panels — Class CC1 or CC2 fire performance. 2607 plastic veneer: max 300 sf panels, 40 ft height (Type I/II buildings). FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer): 2612 — composite columns, beams, panels. Polycarbonate: 2607.5 — impact resistant, used for security glazing and roof panels.
