Special requirements for atriums, covered/open malls, high-rise buildings, underground buildings, motor vehicle facilities, aircraft facilities, stages, and other specific uses.

Section 403: High-rise buildings — buildings with occupied floor >75 ft above lowest level of fire department access. Required: automatic sprinklers, fire alarm, emergency voice/alarm, fire command center, standby power, luminous egress path markings. Section 404: Atriums — require sprinklers, smoke control, glass/fire barriers. Section 402: Covered and open mall buildings — maximum 3 levels above grade, anchor buildings require fire barriers, exit travel distance limits. Section 406: Motor vehicle-related occupancies — parking garages open/enclosed, repair garages, motor fuel-dispensing facilities. Section 410: Stages and platforms — proscenium walls, standpipe/sprinkler, smoke control for stages over 1,000 sf.

Maximum travel distance from any point in a building to an exit shall not exceed 200 feet unsprinklered or 250 feet sprinklered for most occupancies. Specific occupancies have modified limits.
