Requirements for fire protection systems including automatic sprinklers, standpipes, fire alarm, smoke detection, fire extinguishers, and smoke control systems.

Section 901: General — fire protection systems shall be installed, maintained per applicable NFPA standards. Section 903: Automatic sprinkler systems — NFPA 13 throughout buildings exceeding thresholds by occupancy (903.2.1 through 903.2.12). Group A: 12,000 sf fire area. Group B: 12,000 sf. Group E: all educational. Group F-1: 12,000 sf. Group H: all high-hazard. Group I: all institutional. Group M: 12,000 sf. Group R: R-1/R-2 all, R-4 all. Group S-1: 12,000 sf. Section 905: Standpipe systems — required in buildings >3 stories or stories >50 ft above/below fire dept access. Class I (2.5" hose) or Class III (2.5"+1.5"). Section 907: Fire alarm and detection — Group E, I, R-1, R-2 require manual fire alarm. Smoke detection in corridors of I-1, R-1. Section 909: Smoke control — required in atriums, underground buildings, high-rise buildings, stages, covered malls.

Two exits or exit access doorways required from any space where occupant load exceeds the table values. Spaces with occupant load exceeding 500 require a minimum of 3 exits. Spaces exceeding 1,000 require 4 exits.

Maximum travel distance from any point in a building to an exit shall not exceed 200 feet unsprinklered or 250 feet sprinklered for most occupancies. Specific occupancies have modified limits.
