IECC Section 603 — Energy Performance Compliance

Performance-based alternative to prescriptive energy code requirements.

Section 603 permits buildings to demonstrate energy compliance through performance calculation. Building energy simulation compares actual performance to a baseline building meeting prescriptive code. If the building uses equal or lower energy, compliance is achieved. This permits trade-offs such as superior insulation compensating for lower-efficiency HVAC.
