The International Fire Code (IFC) is adopted by jurisdictions to regulate fire prevention and suppression in buildings and on sites. The IFC addresses hazardous materials, fire protection systems, means of egress, and general fire safety. Hazardous materials including flammable liquids, gases, and oxidizers must be stored in approved cabinets or rooms with proper ventilation and containment. Flammable liquid storage is limited based on building type and occupancy. Aerosol containers are regulated due to pressurized contents. Compressed gas cylinders must be secure and protected from heat and physical damage. Open burning is generally prohibited except in approved locations and conditions. Smoking policies must be established and posted. Portable fire extinguishers must be provided in buildings at specified densities, typically one 5-10 pound unit per 3,000-6,000 square feet. Extinguisher types include Type A for ordinary combustibles, Type B for flammable liquids, and Type C for electrical fires. Kitchen areas require Type K extinguishers for cooking oils. Annual maintenance and inspection of extinguishers is required. Fire alarm and sprinkler systems must be maintained in functional condition with regular testing. Fire lanes and emergency access roads must be maintained free of obstructions. Fire hydrants must be accessible with minimum 15-foot clearance. Building addresses must be clearly posted for emergency responder location. Emergency contact information for hazardous materials must be provided to emergency responders.
