IFC Hazardous Materials Storage and Use

Updated Apr 3, 2026
Regulates storage, handling, and use of flammable liquids, gases, and toxic chemicals.

IFC Chapter 27 addresses hazardous materials including flammable liquids, compressed gases, and toxic substances. Flammable liquids with flash points below 100 Fahrenheit must be stored in approved storage cabinets or rooms. Storage cabinet capacity is limited to 60 gallons per cabinet unless multiple cabinets are used. Flammable liquid storage rooms must have fire-resistance rating, ventilation, and proper drainage. Compressed gas cylinders must be secure to prevent tipping, protected from physical damage, and separated from flammable materials. Oxidizers and reducing agents must be stored separately with sufficient distance to prevent ignition if containers leak. Toxic chemicals requiring special handling include acids, bases, and compounds reactive with water. Emergency eyewash and shower equipment must be provided where chemical exposure risk exists.
